Colorectal surgery and proctology is a surgical specialty concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the colon, rectum, and anal region. The Koru Hospital Colorectal Surgery and Proctology Center aims to improve patients' quality of life through the most current surgical techniques and a multidisciplinary approach in this field.

Which Diseases Are Treated?

A wide range of diseases related to the colorectal region is evaluated and treated at our center. Our primary areas of treatment are as follows:

  • Hemorrhoids (Piles): A wide range of treatment options is offered for internal and external hemorrhoids, from conservative methods to laser hemorrhoidectomy, stapled hemorrhoidopexy, and classic surgical methods.
  • Anal Fissure: Medical treatment protocols are applied for the treatment of acute and chronic anal fissures, and in cases where there is no response, surgical interventions such as lateral internal sphincterotomy are performed.
  • Anal Fistula and Perianal Abscess: Treatment is provided through modern surgical methods such as fistulotomy, seton application, LIFT procedure, and endorectal advancement flap.
  • Colon and Rectal Cancers: Oncological resections supported by laparoscopic and robotic surgery, as well as neoadjuvant and adjuvant treatment planning, are carried out with the decision of a multidisciplinary tumor board.
  • Inflammatory Bowel Diseases: Complications requiring surgery for chronic diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are managed.
  • Diverticular Disease: Emergency and elective surgical interventions are planned for complicated diverticulitis.
  • Rectal Prolapse: Surgical correction is performed using abdominal and perineal approaches in cases of rectal prolapse.
  • Pilonidal Sinus (Ingrown Hair): Treated with techniques such as Limberg flap, Karydakis flap, and primary closure.

Our Diagnostic Methods

The foundation of accurate treatment is accurate diagnosis. Advanced diagnostic methods are applied in our Colorectal Surgery and Proctology Center:

  • Colonoscopy: A procedure for the endoscopic visualization of the entire large intestine, polyp detection, and biopsy. Colonoscopy, which is a fundamental component of the colorectal cancer screening program, is performed comfortably under sedation at our center.
  • Rectoscopy and Anoscopy: Office-based diagnostic procedures used for the detailed evaluation of rectal and anal canal diseases.
  • Endorectal Ultrasonography: An imaging method that offers a high accuracy rate in the local staging of rectal tumors and perianal fistula mapping.
  • Anorectal Manometry: Used for anal sphincter pressure measurement and the evaluation of defecation dynamics.
  • CT Colonography (Virtual Colonoscopy): Preferred as an alternative screening method for patients who cannot undergo conventional colonoscopy.

Our Surgical Approaches

Minimal invasive surgical techniques are prioritized at our center. Laparoscopic colorectal surgery provides less pain, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery compared to open surgery. In suitable cases, single-port surgery (SILS) and natural orifice surgical approaches are also applied.

In oncological surgeries, the principles of total mesorectal excision (TME) and complete mesocolic excision (CME) are meticulously applied, aiming to minimize recurrence rates.

Postoperative Process

Within the framework of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols, early postoperative mobilization, early oral nutrition, and pain management are ensured. Patients who undergo stoma surgery are provided with stoma care training and psychological support.

The Importance of Colorectal Cancer Screening

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common types of cancer worldwide. When detected at an early stage, the treatment success rate is over ninety percent. Regular colonoscopy screening for individuals over the age of fifty plays a critical role in preventing deaths due to colorectal cancer. Screening should be initiated at an earlier age for individuals with a family history of colorectal cancer.

Multidisciplinary Approach

A coordinated effort is carried out with the departments of gastroenterology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, and pathology in the treatment of colorectal diseases. Especially in cancer cases, each patient's treatment plan is determined individually during multidisciplinary tumor board meetings.

At the Koru Hospital Colorectal Surgery and Proctology Center, we provide reliable and effective healthcare services to our patients by applying the most current diagnostic and treatment methods with our expert staff.
