Wound Care Center
Koru Hospital Wound Care Center is a specialized center providing services with a multidisciplinary approach, dedicated to the treatment of chronic and complex wounds. The scope of our center includes the evaluation and treatment of all non-healing chronic wounds, including diabetic foot ulcers, pressure ulcers (decubitus ulcers), venous and arterial ulcers, surgical wound complications, traumatic wounds, and burn sequelae.
What is a Chronic Wound?
Wounds that do not show signs of healing within 4-6 weeks despite standard care methods are defined as chronic wounds. Chronic wounds are a significant health problem that severely affects patients' quality of life, causes loss of labor, and, if left untreated, can progress to infection, sepsis, and even amputation.
Primary risk factors involved in the formation of chronic wounds:
- Diabetes mellitus — impaired healing due to peripheral neuropathy and vasculopathy
- Peripheral artery disease (PAD) — reduced tissue perfusion
- Chronic venous insufficiency — venous stasis ulcers
- Immobilization — pressure ulcers in bedridden patients
- Immunosuppression — medications or diseases that suppress the immune system
- Radiotherapy — radiation necrosis and delayed wound healing
- Malnutrition — deficiency of protein, zinc, and vitamin C
Diabetic Foot Treatment
Diabetic foot is the most common cause of lower extremity amputations in Turkey. At Koru Hospital Wound Care Center, a comprehensive evaluation and treatment protocol is applied to diabetic foot patients:
- Neuropathic evaluation — monofilament test, vibration sense, foot pressure mapping
- Vascular evaluation — ankle-brachial index (ABI), Doppler ultrasonography, and CT angiography when necessary
- Wound staging using Wagner and Texas classification systems
- Debridement — removal of necrotic and infected tissues (mechanical, autolytic, enzymatic, or surgical debridement)
- Offloading — application of special orthopedic shoes, total contact casting (TCC), or walking boots to reduce pressure on the wound area
- Antibiotic therapy — targeted antimicrobial treatment based on wound culture and sensitivity tests
- Vascular intervention — collaboration with vascular surgery for angioplasty or bypass surgery in cases of critical limb ischemia
Pressure Ulcers (Decubitus Ulcers)
Pressure ulcers, which develop in patients who remain immobile for long periods, are in intensive care, or are paraplegic/tetraplegic, are frequently seen in the sacrum, heel, trochanter, and ischial tuberosity regions. In our center, the treatment of pressure ulcers is planned according to the NPUAP/EPUAP staging system:
- Stage I-II: Pressure-redistributing mattresses and positioning, moist wound care products, nutritional support
- Stage III-IV: Surgical debridement, negative pressure wound therapy (VAC), planning for graft or flap surgery
- Prevention program: Risk assessment (Braden scale), pressure-redistributing mattresses and seating surfaces, repositioning every 2 hours, skin care, and nutritional optimization
Venous and Arterial Ulcers
Venous ulcers usually appear on the inner aspect of the lower leg and around the ankle due to chronic venous insufficiency. Treatment involves compression therapy (multi-layer bandages, compression stockings), correction of the underlying venous disease, and the use of appropriate wound dressings.
Arterial ulcers occur due to insufficient blood flow caused by peripheral artery disease. The cornerstone of treatment is revascularization (restoring blood flow), and we work in coordination with our vascular surgery team.
Advanced Wound Treatment Technologies
Beyond conventional wound care, advanced treatment modalities are applied at Koru Hospital Wound Care Center:
- Negative pressure wound therapy (VAC/NPWT) — reducing edema, accelerating granulation tissue formation, and wound shrinkage by applying controlled negative pressure
- Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) coordination — increasing tissue oxygenation in resistant cases
- Advanced wound dressings — alginate, hydrofiber, foam, hydrogel, silver-containing antimicrobial dressings, collagen matrices

- Infectious diseases — long-term antibiotic management in wounds infected with resistant pathogens
- Dietetics — nutritional program supporting wound healing, protein and micronutrient supplementation
- Physical therapy — mobilization, exercise, and edema management
Patient Evaluation and Treatment Process
Every patient who applies to our center undergoes a comprehensive evaluation during the first visit. The size, depth, condition of the wound bed, health of the surrounding tissue, presence of infection, and vascular status are systematically recorded. Healing during the treatment process is objectively monitored through digital wound photography and measurement.
The treatment plan is individualized by considering the patient's general health status, underlying diseases, and the etiology and stage of the wound. The decision for outpatient or inpatient treatment is made based on the severity of the wound and the patient's clinical condition.
