Koru Hospital Aviation Medical Center is one of the reference centers in Ankara for health examinations of civil aviation personnel, fitness to fly assessments, and the management of aviation-specific medical issues. Operating under the authorization of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (SHGM), our center provides comprehensive healthcare services in accordance with national and international aviation medicine standards.
Aviation medicine is the branch of medicine that studies the effects of the flight environment on human physiology and evaluates the health status of aviation personnel. Environmental stressors such as decreased oxygen pressure at high altitudes, cabin pressure changes, noise, vibration, cosmic radiation, and circadian rhythm disorders are factors that directly affect the health of aviation personnel.
The primary goal of aviation medicine is to detect health problems that could jeopardize flight safety in advance and to base fitness to fly assessments on objective criteria.
Aviation health examinations are conducted based on the minimum requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), as well as the aviation health regulations published by the SHGM.

Examination Processes
Examination procedures for aviation personnel begin at 08:30 by appointment via telephone.
- Fasting: (Following a light, fat-free dinner, nothing should be eaten or drunk after 22:00, except for water. Drinking plenty of water is recommended. As it affects the results, those who smoke must arrive without smoking in the morning.)
You should bring with you:
- 1 photograph,
- Identity document (national ID card / driver's license / passport / blue card),
- Existing medical certificate / medical examination report, except for the initial examination,
- Glasses/spare glasses/contact lenses if used.
- Breakfast is served to aviation personnel who apply to our center after samples are taken for tests.
- Unless any additional tests or examinations are required, the procedures are completed within the same day.
- Generally, all procedures are completed by noon, and certificates are issued and delivered.
- After the examinations are completed and the relevant documents are delivered to the flight personnel, the medical report and medical certificates are sent to the SHGM via the online automation system and, if requested, to the personnel's company in PDF format.

Special Assessment Areas
Neuropsychiatric Assessment
Conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, sleep disorders, and attention deficit directly affect flight safety. SSRI usage and return-to-flight protocols are managed in accordance with SHGM regulations.
Ear-Nose-Throat and Barotrauma
Cabin pressure changes can lead to barotrauma, especially in individuals with eustachian tube dysfunction. Middle ear and sinus barotrauma are common problems among aviation personnel. At our center, the risk of barotrauma is screened via tympanometry, Valsalva maneuver assessment, and endoscopic sinus examination.
Vision and Color Perception
Visual functions are of critical importance in the pilot profession. Assessments performed at our center include:
- Distance and near visual acuity: Snellen chart, LogMAR measurement
- Color vision: Ishihara test plates
- Contrast sensitivity: Visual performance under low-contrast conditions
- Depth perception: Stereopsis assessment
Fitness to Fly Decision
The fitness to fly decision is made through a holistic evaluation of all examination findings by an Aeromedical Examiner (AME). Possible decisions:
- Fit: All standards are met, certificate is issued
- Temporarily unfit: Temporary restriction due to a treatable condition
- Unfit: Permanent health issue incompatible with flight safety
Periodic Examination Schedule
The validity periods of aviation medical certificates vary according to age and class:
- Class 1 (under 40): Every 12 months
- Class 1 (40 and over): Every 6 months (Single pilot every 6 months, otherwise annually)
- Class 2: Every 60 months (under 40), every 24 months (40-50), every 12 months (over 50)
- Class 3: Every 12 months (every two years until 50, annually over 50)
- Cabin crew: Every 5 years
